Mine happened in a tearoom in Edinburgh. The kind of place with mismatched china and windows that look out onto cobblestones that have been there since before anyone alive can remember. I was queuing for a table when I heard it. That unmistakable accent. Broad, warm, completely out of place in the Scottish drizzle and absolutely music to my ears.
I turned around and there she was. An Australian, travelling solo through Scotland. I practically introduced myself before she had finished her sentence. That is the thing about hearing your own accent when you are far from home. It does not matter that you have never met this person in your life. There is an immediate recognition, a warmth, a tiny rush of something that feels a lot like coming home even though you are both about as far from home as you can get.
I should mention – I am German by birth and Australian by everything else that matters. Home is where the accent lives, and mine has lived in Australia for long enough that there is no going back. Hearing that broad flat vowels in a Scottish tearoom on a grey afternoon was, genuinely, one of the best sounds I had heard in weeks.
We claimed the window seat overlooking the cobblestones, ordered tea, and did what Australians abroad always do within about four minutes of meeting. We compared notes on everywhere we had been, laughed about everything that had gone wrong, and ordered a second pot before the first one was finished.
Somewhere between the travel stories and the third shortbread biscuit the conversation turned to money. Specifically to the absolutely ridiculous fees we had both paid just trying to access our own money in foreign countries. Bank fees that made no sense. I have spent twelve years in international shipping and logistics at the highest level, working with some of the largest shipping companies in the world, moving cargo across oceans, managing complexity that would make most people’s heads spin. I have a Maritime Management degree from Germany and a Logistikerin qualification that I earned before most of the people writing about crypto were born. I am a qualified counsellor and hypnotherapist. I have lived on a boat, homeschooled a child across a continent, grown vegetables in the south of France, and built a life that looks absolutely nothing like the plan I had at twenty five.
I am also someone who got scammed in crypto, rebuilt her confidence from scratch, and decided that the most useful thing she could do with that experience was make sure other women do not have to go through the same thing alone.
